Queremos Teatro (QT) is a community theater program led by ICE Free Queens (IFQ) in collaboration with Immigrant Movement International Corona (IMI Corona). QT affirms the significance of community, family, and place in challenging deportation and state violence and imagines ways that intimate trust can grow in place of intimate violence.
Conceptualized by youth from mixed-status families and based out of neighborhood stories and experiences from the neighborhood of Corona in Queens, QT follows the main character of Mia as she builds relationships with neighbors, family, and local animal friends that together form structures of community solidarity and care necessary to protect against threats of deportation and police. As Mia tells stories of her family history through migrations from Ecuador and the Philippines, ongoing fears of community and family separation and deportation, and current ambitions for defending her neighborhood, she and those around her begin to imagine ways in which they can build a Corona without ICE and police and worlds where people can better support and care for each other.
Downtown Art programs are supported in part through public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with the City Council, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and City Councilmember Rosie Mendez.
